Cadence Chung is an up-and-coming mezzo-soprano singer from Wellington. Her performing has been described as 'glorious' and 'subtly graceful', with 'charisma' and a 'fine stage presence'. She has performed throughout New Zealand in both concerts and operas.
Cadence has had the pleasure of working in the choruses of NZ Opera, Wellington Opera, Days Bay Opera, and Wellington Comic Opera. She is also an active concert singer, having performed as a soloist with institutions such as Stroma New Music Ensemble, Parliament, the New Zealand Choral Federation, the Goethe-Institut, and Victoria University. Cadence has also produced and performed in many of her original theatrical and concert productions.
Cadence has achieved great success in national competitions. She received placings in every class she entered in the 2023 Lockwood Under 21 category, coming 3rd place in the aria section. She was the winner of the Graham Gillespie Cup for highest aggregate marks in the Under 21 section of the Wellington Vocal Competitions two years in a row, and in 2025, she was a finalist in the aria category. Cadence has also received the Cammick Scholarship for an Exceptional Voice Student, the 2025 Ariadne Danilow Music Prize for the BMus student with the highest GPA, the New Zealand School of Music Opera Award for Excellence in Performance, the FAME Emerging Practitioner Award, the Kāpiti Chorale Prize, the Margaret Kate Parker Prize, the Les and Sonia Andrews' Cultural Foundation Prize, and the Victoria University Tangiwai Award for Excellence.
Cadence holds a Bachelor of Music in Classical Performance with First Class Honours from the New Zealand School of Music, where she was on the Dean's List for Academic Excellence every year of her studies. She is one of five artists selected for the 2026/27 uptake at Te Pae Kōkako - The Aotearoa New Zealand Opera Studio. She also attended the 2025 NZ Opera School, and will be attending again in 2026.
